A starter is a tool that limits the use of electrical power to the particular equipment, usually a motor. Starters have the main function of starting, stopping, reversing and protecting the motors. It is the most basic type of motor control panel. The starter panel may include circuit breaker to secure the motor from the issue of overload. These are specially designed electromechanical switches which are similar to relays. The principal difference between a starter and a relay is that a starter contains overload protection for the motor. Some instruments require a high current supply for its effective functioning, this huge current at the starting of a motor can damage the motor windings and this may also cause a large voltage drop.
A starter is necessary to limit this starting current to avoid any damage to the motor, here, a starter reduces initial high current of the motor by reducing the supply voltage applied to the motor. In addition to this, a starter provides protection against overload, single phasing, and low voltage protection. Depending upon the operation, starters are primarily divided into manually and electrically operated devices.
Types of starters
Based on the different techniques, the most common types of starters are listed below
- Stator resistance starter: In this type, a reduced voltage is applied to the induction motors by connecting external resistance. The construction of this starter is simple and this method is most economical. However, there is a drawback of large power loss due to high power dissolution.
- Auto transformer starter: In this type, a three phase auto transformer is connected with the motor. This transformer reduces the voltage applied to the motor. Here, the motor terminal voltage is higher for a given starting current as compared to other reduced voltage methods.
- Star delta starter: This type is the most commonly used starter and here also reduced voltage is used and it is the cheapest starter among all others which is maintenance free.
- Direct on line starter: In this type, no need to reduce voltage to the motor at the starting point and hence the motor can be connected directly to the supply lines. This feature provides security against overloading, single phasing and low voltage. It is one of the most reliable method and is therefore widely used. The only problem is the drawing of high current at the start.
- Soft starter: Here, the use of semiconductor switches is made for reducing the starting current to the motors. Even this is another type of reduced voltage starter. A variable frequency drive is used which incorporates the soft start function, in case of large motors. This way the speed of the motor is controlled to a desired value.
